Meridian Police boosts DUI enforcement from Dec. 15 to New Year's to curb incidents

Starting Dec. 15 until New Year's Eve weekend, the Meridian Police Department will increase efforts to curb DUI-related incidents. The goal is to provide educational resources and enforce laws to ensure the safety of families during the holiday season.

In 2022, the MPD dealt with more than 500 drunk driving cases. This increased enforcement comes when traffic fatalities throughout Idaho have reached an all-time high, according to the Idaho Transportation Department Office of Highway Safety.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Before you begin your celebrations, arrange for a safe ride home. Designate a non-drinking friend as your driver for the day.
  • If you know someone who has been drinking, do not let them drive. Offer to help them find a sober ride home or take their keys to prevent them from getting behind the wheel.
  • Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol. Instead, call a taxi, a ride-share service, or a sober friend to take you home.
  • If you are hosting a party, ensure your guests leave with a sober driver.
  • Always wear your seat belt. It is the best protection against impaired drivers on the road.

Contact local law enforcement if you see an impaired driver on the road. Your actions may help save someone's life.

Traffic Sergeant Tara Smith emphasizes the importance of responsible drinking by highlighting the availability of ride-share options. "Instead of driving under the influence, individuals should plan ahead for a safe ride home. By doing so, they not only protect themselves but also others on the road."
